We are all familiar with the social implication of being obese or overweight; how people with obesity find it difficult, if not impossible, to participate in many social activities in their communities. Obese or overweight children suffer low self-esteem and are usually subject to discrimination at school and in their neighbourhood. Consequently, these insecurities can lead to negative effects such as performing badly at school, depression, and difficulties coping with peers. People with obesity are known to have higher blood pressure compared to a person with a lower BMI. Obesity leads to the increase in cardiac output and blood volume. Its stimulation of high secretion of insulin in order to remove the excess sugar concentration from the blood leads to a lot of body modifications which, consequently, increases a person’s blood pressure.
Diabetes is another common health problem associated with obesity. It is a metabolic disorder distinguished by high blood glucose, and the shortage of insulin in the body. Type 2 diabetes, in particular, is known to be majorly caused by obesity. The accumulation of fats in the body leads to insulin resistance. The high secretion of insulin from the pancreas leads to the complication of diabetes.
Cardiovascular disease covers a wide range of complications related to the cardiovascular system including stroke and heart attack, vascular disease of the brain and kidney, and peripheral arterial diseases. Obesity is considered as a major risk factor for heart disease as it encourages the occurrence of high blood pressure.
These are simply among the many diseases that are easily associated to obesity. Other health complications such as high cholesterol levels, cancer, infertility, skin infections, and many more are just as commonly related to the disease as the ones mentioned above. What’s most relieving about this is that even just a small decrease in body weight (just as little as 8 to 20 lbs.) can help in avoiding these diseases. Losing weight is not at all difficult once a person sets his mind on it, and is aware of the benefits that will be gained from it. There are also various diet and exercise programs that he may participate in, and all he has to do is choose the best one for him.
