Research shows that physical activity combined with proper nutrition decreases body fat, improves muscle endurance and strength. Most importantly, it decreases the overall risk for disease. Fit and Healthy School’s program addresses both physical activity and nutrition. Our program supplements the school’s Physical Education (P.E.) curriculum.
Fit and Healthy School’s program is designed by our multidisciplinary team of Exercise Physiologists, Child Development Specialists, Certified Personal Trainers / Group Exercise Instructors, Physical Educators, and Certified Nutritionists.
The exercises showcase proper form to prevent injury and increase overall strength and conditioning. Our exercise prescriptions are based on initial individual fitness levels. With feedback, the progression of the program will follow the student’s unique adaptation process to physical activity. The time frame and long range goals are measured quarterly by the student’s physical education teachers and Fit and Healthy School’s Staff.
Fit and Healthy School’s program is comprised of five elements of overall wellness for youth:
Aerobic (Cardiovascular) Exercise:
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) defines aerobic exercise as “any activity that uses large muscle groups, can be maintained continuously, and is rhythmic in nature.” This type of exercise overloads the heart and lungs and causes them to work harder than at rest.
Examples Include: walking, jogging, running, cardio kickboxing, and hip-hop dancing.
Flexibility (Stretching) Exercise:
Stretching increases range of motion, improves posture, and decreases risk for injury.
Strength Training (Resistance) Exercise:
Strength training or resistance training is defined as any exercise that increases muscle strength and endurance against a resistive force. Our program focuses on proper techniques for a wide range of exercises specifically for youth, primarily calisthenics.
These exercises include – but are not limited to – push-ups, pull-ups, jumping jacks, jump rope, squats and sit-ups. Additionally, at the high schools, we educate the students about proper weight lifting techniques.
Awareness and Prevention:
Education is needed to combat the social problems of obesity, eating disorders, and substance abuse.
Self Defense, Anti-Bullying & Kindness Programs:
More and more children are suffering from low self esteem and lack of awareness and ability to respond in many social situations. Our programs include martial arts, self defense as well as programs on Anti-Bullying and Kindness Awareness weeks.
Fit and Healthy Schools is committed to improving student and parent awareness of the need for physical activity and proper nutrition. We accomplish this by building fit and healthy schools, focusing on one youth at a time. Our team serves with integrity, confidence, honesty, trustworthiness and fun.
